Your AirPods already support Spatial Audio, the surround-sound technology Apple bundles into every Dolby Atmos track on Apple Music and select content in Apple TV Plus, Netflix, and Disney Plus. Personalized Spatial Audio takes that further by scanning your ear geometry with the iPhone TrueDepth camera and building a custom Head-Related Transfer Function profile tuned to the shape of your head. The promise: audio objects land where they should, movies sound like actual rooms, and music wraps around you instead of floating vaguely overhead.
The catch is that most people run the scan once, never think about it again, and have no idea whether it changed anything. Some users report a dramatic improvement. Others notice zero difference. And a surprising number get stuck during calibration without knowing why.
I ran the scan on AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max 2 across two different iPhones. Here is what actually happened.
AdWhat Personalized Spatial Audio Actually Does Under the Hood
Apple introduced Personalized Spatial Audio in iOS 16 back in 2022, but the feature has quietly evolved across several firmware updates since then. The system uses your iPhone TrueDepth camera — the same sensor cluster that powers Face ID — to create a three-dimensional map of your ears and head shape. It captures a front-facing profile plus both ear profiles from roughly 45-degree angles.
That ear geometry data feeds into an algorithm that generates a custom HRTF, which is the mathematical model describing how sound travels around and into your specific ears before hitting your eardrums. Everyone hears spatial cues differently based on ear canal depth, pinna shape, and head width. A generic HRTF works okay for most people. A personalized one should make directional audio feel noticeably more precise.
Your profile syncs across all Apple devices signed into the same Apple Account using end-to-end encryption. The actual camera images never leave your iPhone and are deleted immediately after processing. Apple confirms this in their Personalized Spatial Audio privacy documentation.
Why the Calibration Scan Feels Harder Than It Should
The calibration itself takes about sixty seconds, but the way Apple designed the capture interface is oddly frustrating. You hold your iPhone at arm length, center your face, and slowly rotate your head in a circle. Then you switch the phone to your right hand, extend it 45 degrees to the right, and turn your head left so the TrueDepth camera can map your right ear. Repeat on the left side.
That sounds simple. In practice, the circle tracking indicator is picky. Move too fast and it resets. Move too slow and nothing registers. The sweet spot is a deliberate, steady rotation that feels unnatural — like you are performing a very boring yoga exercise for your neck.
The ear captures are worse. Apple tells you to hold the phone at 45 degrees, but the angle tolerance is tight. If your arm drifts even slightly, the progress indicator freezes without any error message. On my first attempt with AirPods Pro 3, the left ear capture stalled three times before I realized I was holding the phone too close. Twelve inches is the target distance, and your arm naturally wants to creep inward.
One thing that genuinely helps: do the scan in a well-lit room. The TrueDepth camera is an infrared projector, not a standard camera, so ambient light should not matter. But in testing, the capture completed faster and more reliably in a bright room than a dim one. Apple does not mention this anywhere.
AdThe Honest Verdict on Three Different AirPods Models
Here is the honest assessment. On AirPods Pro 3 with the H2 chip, switching from generic to personalized Spatial Audio shifts the soundstage about 10 to 15 percent wider. Music mixed in Dolby Atmos sounds less like it is playing inside your skull and more like it exists in a small room around you. The difference is subtle but real, especially on tracks with prominent height channels — overhead instruments in orchestral recordings, atmospheric effects in film scores, and vocal separation in live concert mixes.
On AirPods Pro 2, the improvement was harder to notice. The older H2 chip handles Spatial Audio identically in theory, but the head tracking felt slightly less responsive after enabling personalization. Toggling between personalized and generic did not produce a dramatic before-and-after moment.
AirPods Max 2 showed the biggest gap. The larger drivers and improved computational audio pipeline seem to benefit more from accurate HRTF data. Movie content in particular sounded noticeably more directional with personalization enabled. Dialogue anchored to the center of the screen more convincingly, and environmental sounds tracked head movement with less latency.
The takeaway is that Personalized Spatial Audio works, but the magnitude of improvement scales with your hardware and with the content you are listening to. Stereo music with the spatialized stereo filter applied? Marginal difference at best. Native Dolby Atmos film content on AirPods Max 2? Legitimately better. When the Scan Fails: Every Fix Worth Trying
If the scan gets stuck, stalls, or never completes, try these fixes before giving up on it entirely. First, restart your iPhone. A reboot clears whatever sensor state might be interfering with the TrueDepth camera. Second, make sure your AirPods firmware is current. Open Settings, tap your AirPods name, and check the firmware version. Third, toggle off Mono Audio in Settings, Accessibility, Audio and Visual. Mono Audio disables Spatial Audio entirely, and the personalization scan will not complete while it is active.
If the scan completes but the result sounds wrong — sounds feel misplaced or the soundstage collapses to one side — delete your profile and redo it. Go to Settings, tap your AirPods, select Personalized Spatial Audio, then choose Stop Using Personalized Spatial Audio. Run the scan again in better lighting with your arms fully extended.
One edge case worth flagging: if you wear glasses with thick frames, the ear capture can map the frame edge instead of your pinna. Remove your glasses before scanning. Apple does not warn you about this, and the result is a skewed HRTF that makes the left and right channels sound slightly unbalanced.
Every AirPods Model and Device That Supports the Feature
Personalized Spatial Audio works on AirPods Pro first generation, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max and AirPods Max 2, AirPods third generation and later, plus several Beats models including the Beats Fit Pro, Studio Pro, Solo 4, and Powerbeats Pro 2. You need an iPhone with Face ID running iOS 16 or later to create the profile. After setup, the profile works on any device signed into your Apple Account: iPhone, iPad with iPadOS 16.1 or later, Mac with Apple silicon running macOS Ventura or later, Apple Watch with watchOS 9 or later, Apple TV with tvOS 16 or later, and Apple Vision Pro.
That cross-device sync is one of the underappreciated parts of the feature. You scan once on your iPhone and the profile propagates everywhere via iCloud with end-to-end encryption. Apple cannot read your ear data. Your playback devices cannot see the raw images. The only thing shared is the computed HRTF model. Why You Should Re-Run the Scan Even if You Already Did It
If you already ran Personalized Spatial Audio months ago and forgot about it, re-running the scan is worth doing. Apple has updated the calibration algorithm through firmware updates since the feature launched, and a fresh scan on current firmware produces a more accurate profile than one generated in 2022 or 2023. Your ears have not changed, but the math has.
The scan takes sixty seconds. The improvement on AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 is real. The improvement on older hardware is more subtle. And the calibration process itself still has rough edges that Apple could smooth out with better visual feedback during the capture. But for something that is free, baked into your existing hardware, and genuinely based on your personal anatomy, it is one of the few AirPods features where the effort pays back every time you press play.
